24th June 2024: Thai Eco Solutions, Volunteers and Local Business Support Come Together to Help Mangrove Restoration
Eco Tours Chiang Mai and parent company, Thai Eco Solutions recently visited Sathahip in Chonburi province for 2 days of mangrove restoration with volunteers from northern Thailand, Chicony Electronics Thailand Co.,Ltd and the Royal Thai Navy Seals who manage the project. The aim of the project was to maintain the health and survival of approximately 1000 mangrove trees planted over the last few years – some of which planted by Thai Eco Solutions in 2019.
The project required the roots of the trees to be pegged to the ground, allowing them the time to root properly and to aid the growth of the trees. During the time the area was cleared and prior to the restoration project, the topsoil was eventually eroded down to bare rock making it difficult for the new trees to take root so with this procedure the chances of the trees surviving into maturity are significantly improved. With areas of planting taking place at different times over the years, it is clear to see the benefits to the local environment, with plenty of aquatic life such as crabs and snails scurrying around and with more organic matter covering the ground thanks to the protection provided by the mangrove trees from the sea.
The young trees were still surrounded by a protective casing, which eventually will decay allowing the trees to thrive once mature enough. Part of the weekend was spent topping up soil and fertilizer in the containers to encourage further growth. The technique used in this area is very labor and cost intensive but with a 90% survival rate, it is a procedure proven to work effectively.
Volunteers from Mae Wang Off Road Club drove overnight to join in the efforts, working hard for 2 days to complete as many trees as possible. The project is just one of many supported by Mae Wang Off Road Club who frequently give up their time to help causes throughout Thailand.
Chicony Electronics Thailand Co.,Ltd joined for an afternoon as part of an endeavor to help the environment near their factory location in Chachoensao and to provide a unique team building opportunity for employees. A kind donation was also made to help pay for materials to ensure the project can continue which was much appreciated by the team on the ground.
