Fire Break Clearing
Case Study
Wildfires in northern Thailand can have a detrimental effect, not only on the flora and fauna within a forested area, but also people’s health as air quality drops to unhealthy levels. Creating a fire break is a preventative strategy, aimed at reducing the amount of burning that takes place and is am important means of reducing the amount of burning.
On Saturday 23rd January, Thai Eco Solutions embarked on a firebreak event supported by Doi Suthep-Pui National Park and various partners including Noren Resort by El Greco, Lanna Language School, Lotus Yoga by Lanna Thara and Sala Thai Restaurant as well as volunteers living in Chiang Mai. Trailhead Thailand and Wildside Chiang Mai kindly provided transportation and tools for the event.
The site chosen for the firebreak was Doi Hua Moo, the site of a recent tree planting event held by Thai Eco Solutions in 2020 with the aim to prevent the saplings from burning in an eventuality of a wildfire starting.
After having gained permission from the national park, Thai Eco Solutions organized all logistics such as tools, transportation, meals and labor and embarked on the event in the morning of the 23rd.
After an initial briefing, volunteers and park staff set about clearing a gap around the recently planted trees, a task which proved quite difficult with the steep terrain. However after 3 hours of hard work the firebreak was completed and everyone could enjoy a delicious lunch and refreshments on the summit of Doi Hua Moo, enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
The project continues into the 2021 dry season with more projects planned with the help of our sponsors and volunteers.
